The 2000 committee workshop and =
seminar held in=20
Tallahassee February 15th through 17th was a tremendous success. This =
year's=20
education seminar was conducted in a different format, and was presented =
by=20
Barbara Burke working in a skit format, with the honorable Lee Huszagh=20
presiding, to explore escrow losses and problems, and when and how =
Surety and=20
Fidelity bonds function in real situations. This presentation was taped =
and will=20
be shown later for C.E. workshops.=20
The Governmental Affairs Committee reviewed pending legislation and =
at this=20
point there does not seem to be any issues that will greatly effect our=20
industry. Please stay tuned, as you know this could change at any time. =
One item=20
that is universally agreed upon is that we all need to know and visit =
our local=20
legislators. Have you done so yet? If not, make it a point to do so as =
soon as=20
possible so that the industry can have a more recognized voice in what =
happens=20
in Tallahassee.=20
There has been no decision yet in the Butler case, and you may want =
to keep=20
informed of any developments by looking at FLTA.ORG.=20
There was also considerable discussion at this meeting as to some of =
the=20
extreme marketing practices that are rapidly spreading throughout the =
state and=20
many questions as to the legality of these practices were asked of Mr. =
Wally=20
Senter of the Department of Insurance. Mr. Senter acknowledged that he =
is aware=20
of the practices and the unique ways at which some are attempting to =
circumvent=20
the laws pertaining to these issues. It was relieving to me to hear that =
he will=20
be visiting and examining several of these operations conducting these =
programs=20
to determine if any violations exist. We will update you as to the =
results of=20
these investigations.=20
Another area of concern is the way in which lenders will be =
approaching the=20
title insurance and settlement services industry, and the changes this =
and their=20
dedication to electronic data interchange will have an impact on the way =
our=20
industry works. This will become more apparent every day and it would be =
wise to=20
keep communications with your local banking community so you are not =
left out of=20
the opportunities or changes that will surely take place.=20
In short, changes are really starting to accelerate, leaving little =
time to=20
keep operating as you have in the past. Keep our ears and eyes open, and =
keep=20
good communication with your customers so that you will know when and =
how to=20
take advantage of the changes and opportunities that will be coming. I =
can't say=20
that enough! The more you learn, the more insight you will have.=20

After more than 43 years in the title insurance business, Wayne =
Levins has=20
decided to retire in order to spend more time with his lovely wife Mary =
and his=20
children and grandchildren. In 1956 Wayne began his career in Panama =
City=20
working with Lawyers Title Insurance Corporation. He later joined =
Chelsea Title=20
where he was instrumental in the acquisition of the over 5,000 parcels =
that=20
would comprise the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral launching =
facility.=20
He next worked with American Title Insurance Company then on to =
Commonwealth=20
Land Title Insurance Company where he served in many capacities closing =
out his=20
career as Senior Vice President and Florida/Caribbean Manager for =
LandAmerica.=20
Wayne served as President of the FLTA in 1979-80. The Board of Directors =
of the=20
FLTA in the recently concluded winter meeting has appointed Wayne Levins =
as=20
Honorary Life Member of the FLTA.=20
John Standish Remembered=20
John M. Standish, District Manager for Stewart Title Guaranty =
Company, died=20
on January 27, 2000 at his home in Boca Raton. John is survived by his =
wife of=20
33 years Sharon, and their 3 daughters Elisabeth, Jennifer and Amanda. =
John will=20
be missed by his many friends and associates in the title business.=20
